This year though has been PHENOMENAL!

We’ve had an amazing 24 inches of rain this year to date already. (The total for last year was 12.5, which is about average, though the average has been dropping over the years we’ve been here.) With this year’s rains, we can visually see the difference as grasses are returning and the land and animals are taking a collective sigh of relief.

There have been several big storms this year, and last night we had another one with over 1.3 inches of rain in a little under an hour, as well big hail and crazy wind. Afterward, you could actually hear water flowing on our road from our doorstep a couple hundred feet away.

The storm took out 18 power poles in our area and closed the main paved road. Most of the area has no power today. (Because we are on solar, we always have power.) It was lovely to look out over our valley last night and see inky darkness everywhere.

This storm completely wiped out the swale Brad had built to divert water from our road to an area of trees that also serves as a wildlife refuge on our property. (This both helps our land and spares our road from further degradation, which is a constant problem.)

Here’s a video from a couple weeks ago of the swale when it was functioning:

And here is the same area this morning after the storm last night:

So it’s back to digging out a new swale, but we’re happy to do that and happy to keep getting this glorious rain.

Like many other areas, our region has been in a prolonged drought, and the last couple years in particular have seen a die-off of trees, grasses, and other plants and a reduction in the birds and wildlife.
